TYT MD-9600 Dual Band DMR Mobile Radio

Following up from the MD-2017 Dual Band HT, TYT now releases their long-awaited dual band mobile radio, the MD-9600.

Don’t mistake this radio for a fake dual band – there are actually 2 versions, but both are called the MD-9600.  The radio is available in UHF-only, VHF-only, or dual band; and the dual band version is only $20 more than the monoband.  I don’t plan to purchase or review the monoband at all, I don’t really see the point.  This is a dual band radio, and you can see both bands displayed and used in the video below.  New software is upcoming that will allow the user to import a codeplug from either the MD-2017 or the MD-380, one or the other – unconfirmed which yet.

    I bought the MD-2017 because of your review and because Ty & Travis were working toward MD-380 Tools firmware for that radio. I will buy the MD-9600 in 2 months. Disclaimer: this month I bought the RFinder M1 (shout out to Bob’s crew) and I can only buy one toy a month and it’s either a gun or a radio every time. BTW, once you start using the MD-380 Tools experimental firmware it’s hard to use a DMR radio without it, especially the user.csv or the last-call function. I’m all in on DMR now. I don’t really have the time to dabble with other digital modes and DMR is exploding here in the DC area almost as much as it is overseas. And most of our repeater owners are using emergency power and a ham-based IP link (BBHN, AREDN, etc.). If we can only get the DMR ‘network folks’ (Brandmeister, DMR-MARC, etc.) to settle on a single system that will link them all globally, then we can get seamless coverage on DMR wherever you go. It can only happen from the grassroots, and you’ve been part of making that happen. Thank you.

  3. I am getting the new dual band TYT md-2017 today cant wait to try it out. I really like the DMR radios, but I also still like the analog type too.

  4. Congrats on the videos – absolutely marvellous!
    Now …. if TYT had made the MD-9600 with a remote head; they would have hit the jackpot here in Europe with our smaller cars! Remote mic and the ability to ‘drop in’/import MD380/390 codeplugs would have been a real clincher! Maybe in the next model? But … watching the TYT 2017 & MD-9600 with interest! 73. Richard G8ITB

  5. Looking at setting up a DMR mototrbo repeater in Springhill. Need ideas on a good setup. Thinking of a local talk group on one time slot and a wide area network on the other time slot, any idea on what would be good in this area? Wanted to write you an email but couldn’t find an address? Any ideas appreciated!

  6. Are you sure that is a “standard T Connector” ?
    Look at the ‘ T ‘, the vertical contact is off-center, and a standard T the vertical contact is centered.

      1. I pulled out some Yaesu ‘ T ‘ Connectors today and they are the same as the connector supplied with the MD-9600.
        I do hope a tools package comes available for the MD-9600 like is available for the md-380.
        I played with programming contacts today and exporting them to a csv file, then editing and adding to the csv file, then importing back into the MD-9600.

    I just watched episode 91 about the Kenwood 5800 mobile. in that episode you mentioned that the Motorola XPR5550s could be set up so 1 head controls 2 radio decks… is that something you have any more info on? I love the XPR5550 and would like to go that route if that is truly something that radio can do.
